Every season, the football fans are desperate to determine who will win Ballon d'Or. Barcelona star, Lionel Messi won the last Ballon d'Or in 2019. He is also the record 6-times recipient of the award. Messi's rival Juventus star, Cristiano Ronaldo has 5 Ballon d'Or in his pocket. The two of the best players of all time dominated world football throughout the 2010s. Only Croatian star Luka Modric managed to win the Ballon d'Or once in 2018 through the 2010s when he played a key role in Real Madrid's 3rd consecutive Champions League victory in 2018, as well as led Croatia to World Cup final first time in history.

More than 14 million people across the globe contracted the COVID-19 pandemic, whereas over 600k people died of it as of July 2020. And it is not stopping here. The COVID-19 sent the world into either lockdown or self-isolation for months.

The COVID-19 pandemic affected daily life, health, entertainment, as well as the economy of the country. Football is one of them. Due to the pandemic, football leagues across the globe were suspended indefinitely. Football leagues resumed in June to complete the remaining season. All the remaining fixtures were played without spectators. As of 20 July 2020, Bundesliga and La Liga have already completed, whereas there are only a few matches left in Serie A and Premier League. Ligue 1 did not even return, they suspended the league and announced PSG the league winners.

Bayern Munich star Robert Lewandowski was one of the favorite players to win the Ballon d'Or this year, as he helped the club to win the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal with 34 league goals. He is also the top scorer in Europe's top 5 leagues so far.

On the other hand, Lionel Messi failed Barcelona to win La Liga as well as Copa del Rey titles. Despite his club failures, he managed to compile 25 goals and record 21 assists this season. Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo has already scored 28 goals, 1 behind Serie A top scorer Ciro Immobile. Juventus is close to winning the Serie A this year as well. Other players named for the top contenders for Ballon d'Or were Manchester City stars Kevin De Bruyne and Sterling, Liverpool star Mohamed Salah, PSG star Kylian Mbappe, Real Madrid star Sergio Ramos and Karim Benzema among others. However, it is now useless to discuss who will win Ballon d'Or 2020.
