Halima Aden became the first Sports Illustrated model to wear a burkini and hijab. The 21-years old Somali-American model made history when she appeared on Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue wearing a burkini and hijab.
She went to Instagram sharing her Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue cover. She encouraged women of different backgrounds and looks to stand together and celebrate. She also thanked Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue for the opportunity. She wrote, "Don’t change yourself .. Change the GAME!! Ladies anything is possible!!! Being in Sports Illustrated is so much bigger than me. It’s sending a message to my community and the world that women of all different backgrounds, looks, upbringings... can stand together and be celebrated. Thank you so much @si_swimsuit & the entire team for giving me this incredible opportunity."
Earlier, she rose to prominence after she competed in the Miss Minnesota USA, becoming the first woman to wear a hijab in the beauty pageant. Her participation in the beauty pageant earned her national attention and she signed with IMG Models. She was also the first hijab-wearing model to walk international runways and to be signed to a major agency.
