John Souttar is a Scottish professional football player who plays for Heart of Midlothian in the Scottish Premiership and for the club Scotland national team as a centre-back. He started playing football for the youth team of Brechin City Youths in 2002 and played until 2006. In 2006, he joined the youth team of Dundee United and began his career at the club. He signed a professional contract in July 2012 and became a member of the club's under-20 development squad. After just four months in the development team, injuries and suspensions led to him making his first-team debut on 2 January 2013 and becoming the youngest ever player to play for Dundee United, at the age of 16 years and 99 days. On 1 February 2016, he signed for fellow Scottish Premiership club Heart of Midlothian, agreeing on a three-and-a-half-year contract for an undisclosed fee. He made his debut for the club on 10 February 2016. On 14 January 2022, Rangers announced Souttar had signed a pre-contract agreement to bring him to the club at the end of the 2021-22 season once his contract with Hearts runs out.

On the international level, he has represented Scotland at various age levels. He has represented Scotland at U17, U19, U21, and the senior level.   • He started playing football for the youth team of Brechin City Youths in 2002 where he was coached by his father in a successful team also containing Ryan Gauld and Euan Spark.
  • In 2006, he joined the youth team of Dundee United and began his career at the club. He signed a professional contract in July 2012 and became a member of the club's under-20 development squad.
