New York Red Bulls

MetroStars (now the New York Red Bulls) selected  Altidore with the 17th overall pick in 2006 MSL SuperDraft. 

He spent the majority of the 2006 season away from the team while working towards his high school in diploma in Florida. 

He made his professional debut on 23 August 2006 against D.C. United. 

He scored his first professional goal in a 1-0 win against Columbus Crew on 16 September 2006. He was 16 years old then. 

He became the youngest player to score in the MLS playoffs at 16 years and 337 days after he scored a goal in a 2-1 loss to D.C. United in the Eastern Conference Semifinals Series. 

He was also the youngest player to start in MLS playoff match at 16 years and 349 days.

Spain

Spanish Club Villarreal agreed to sign Altidore for reported $10 million in June 2008. It was the largest fee paid for any MLS player at the time. 

He made his La Liga debut agaisnt Deportivo La Coruna in September 2008. 

He became the first American international to score in La Liga when he scored a goal against Athletic Bilbao in November 2008. He scored a goal coming on in the 90th minute. 

He then played for Spanish club Xerez, English club Hull City, Turkish club Bursaspor on loans until 2011.

He underwent minor surgery on an injured toenail in April 2009. He required more than a month of recovery. Thus, he never appeared for Xerez. 

He was loaned to Hull city for $11 million. 

AZ Alkmaar

Dutch club AZ Alkmaar signed him in July 2011. 

He made his AZ debut in a 3-1 win over PSV Eindhoven. He scored in his debut match for the AZ.

He scored the first hat-trick of his club career in September 2012 against Roda JC.

Toronto FC

Canadian club Toronto FC acquired Altidore in an undisclosed fee in January 2015. They signed him to a Designated Player contract. 

He marked his competitive debut for Toronto in March 2015 against Vancouver Whitecaps. 

He was dismissed as a substitute after directing foul and abusive language at a fourth official against the New York Red Bulls around the end of the 2015-16 season. 

He scored 14 goals in 27 appearances in his debut season. 

He lifted his first trophy with Toronto in 2016 when he helped the club to clinch the 2016 Canadian Championship though he didn't register a goal during the campaign. 

Altidore helped Toronto to reach the MLS Cup Final for the first time in their history. They faced Seattle Sounders in the finals but lost to them on penalties. 

He finished 15 goals in 29 games in his second season at Toronto. 

Toronto retained their Canadian Championship in 2017 defeating Montreal Impact 3-2 on aggregate.

He once again helped Toronto to win 2017 MLS Cup Final, where he was also named MLS Cup MVP. 

He finished the 2017 season with 18 goals in 33 games.

He was sidelined for 6 weeks after surgery to remove bone fragments from his foot, the injury he sustained in the 2018 CONCACAF Champions League Final. 

He scored a hat-trick in a 5-2 home win over Vancouver Whitecaps to seal the 2018 Canadian Championship in August 2018. They won with a 7-4 on aggregate. 

International Career

Altidore has represented the United States national team at different age levels. He has represented United States U17, U20, and U23 national teams before making his debut for the senior team in 2007. 

He made his senior team debut for US national team in November 2007 against South Africa.

He scored his first international goal for the US senior team in a friendly match against Mexico in February 2008. 

He scored a hat-trick in a 3-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago in April 2009, making him the youngest American to score a hat-trick in an international game.

He helped his team to reach the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup final, where the US lost to Brazil 3-2. 

He represented US in the 2010 FIFA World Cup but did not register any goals in the competition.

He represented US in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, but he sustained a hamstring injury in their opening match against Ghana. 

He received his first Red Card for verbally abusing referee Luca Banti in an eventual 1-1 friendly draw against Switzerland in Zurich in March 2015. 

He became the 17th American to reach 100 international caps after starting against Serbia in January 2017.
