Ryan was always interested in sports from an early age. He is the nephew of John Loughery, a former quarterback at Boston College also his cousin, Mike McGlinchey is a player who is drafted by the San Francisco 49ers.

Ryan attended the William Penn Charter School where he was a three-year starter who captured All-Southeastern Pennsylvania accolades as a senior quarterback. Ryan also earned All-East honors from Larunt Lemming Prep Football Report and All-City first-team honors in 2002. He was named the captain of all three teams his senior year, after which he received several scholarships offers as a sophomore. 

Ryan then joined Boston College in 2003 where he was named the starting quarterback. He made his collegiate debut on October 2, 2004, against the UMass Minutemen. Ryan was even awarded the 2004 Freshman Male Scholar-Athlete Award and was named the "Most Valuable Player of the MPC Computers Bowl"/

Ryan kicked off his professional career after he was drafted third overall by the Atlanta Falcons in the 2008 NFL Draft. 

Ryan was named the starting quarterback for the season opener against the Detroit Lions on August 24, 2008. 

Ryan was named "Diet Pepsi Rookie of the Week", "NFC Rookie of the Month", "AP NFL Rookie of the Year" and "All-Rookie Team" for the 2008 season.

During the 2009 season, he suffered a turf toe injury and missed several matches.
