The 27 aged Meyers was born to James Leonard(father) and Tracie Leonard(mother). His father James Leonard was a golf pro player and his mother Tracie was an athlete.

On December 5, 2011, he was named "Big 10 Co-Player of the Week" after averaging 16.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game with two Illinois victories. On October 2016, he was allowed to play after his left shoulder's surgery, and just after then on December he scored a season-high 16 points off the bench in a 110–90 loss to the San Antonio Spurs.

On May 20, 2019, in Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals, Leonard recorded a career-high 30 points and 12 rebounds in a 119–117 overtime loss to the Golden State Warriors.
