She is well recognized for appearing as Debra Barone in the CBS sitcom "Everybody Loves Raymond" (1996-2005) and as Frances "Frankie" Heck on the ABC sitcom "The Middle" (2009-2018). She made her TV debut in a 1989 episode of the series "Alien Nation" whereas she made her theatrical film debut in "Memoirs of an Invisible Man" as Ellen in 1992. As well, she has written a book called "Your Second Act: Inspiring Stories of Transformation" with a release date of  21st July 2020. She was also seen as Carol Kenney in the television series "Carol's Second Act" (2019-2020). Additionally, on 6th January 2021, the same day as the 2021 storming of the United States Capitol, Heaton tweeted that she switched from the Republican Party to the Independent.
