Shelton Jackson Lee, popularly known by the name Spike Lee is an American film director, producer, writer, and actor. He has appeared in numerous films He has produced and directed. He made his directorial debut with She's Gotta Have It in 1986. His production company, 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks, has already produced over 35 films since 1983. He has examined race relations, colorism in the black community in his films. He has garnered numerous accolades for his work in the film industry including an Academy Award, BAFTA Award, Emmy Awards, and Student Academy Award. He has also received an Academy Honorary Award, an Honorary BAFTA Award, an Honorary Cesar, and the Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize.

Director Spike Lee got furious when 'Green Book' won the best picture at 91st Academy Awards

Spike Lee, director, producer, and writer made headlines when he stormed out of the Dolby Theater after it was announced that 'Green Book' won the Best Picture at the 91st Academy Awards on Monday.

The 61-years old veteran director was up for two nominations, Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay for BlacKkKlansman and won one for the Best Adapted Screenplay.


Shortly after "Green Book" was announced the winner for Best Picture, the director walked towards the back of the auditorium in furious, where he was stopped at the doors and he eventually returned back to his seat. He called that the  'Green Book' winning the Best Picture was a wrong call made.

Spike Lee was born on 20 March 1957. His birth name is Shelton Jackson Lee. He was born to a father, William James Edward Lee III, and a mother, Jacqueline Carroll. His birthplace is in Atlanta, Georgia, in the United States. He holds American nationality. He has three younger siblings. His zodiac sign in Pisces. He has a sister, Joie, and two brothers, Cinque, and David. He was a child when his family moved to Brooklyn, New York.

His independent film, Joe's Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads, was the first student film to be showcased in Lincoln Center's New Directors/New Film Festival.

He made his directorial debut in a feature film, She's Gotta Have in 1985. He made the film with a budget of $175000 and was shot in two weeks.

The film was released in 1986 which grossed over $7,000,000 at the U.S. box office. 

His 1989 film, Do the Right Thing was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay in 1989.

He made a documentary, 4 Little Girls about the children killed in the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham, Alabama. His documentary was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Feature Documentary.

The 50th San Francisco International Film Festival honored Spike Lee with the San Francisco Film Society's Directing Award in May 2007.

He was awarded the Wexner Prize in 2008.

He won one of the richest prizes in the American arts worth $300,000, The Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize in 2013.

He received an Academy Honorary Award from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences in 2015 for his contribution to film.
