Thomas David Heaton is an English professional football player who plays for Premier League club Aston Villa and the England national team as a goalkeeper. He started playing football for the youth team of Wrexham. In 2002, he moved to the youth team of Manchester United and began his career with Manchester United but was unable to break into the first team and spent time on loan with Swindon Town, Royal Antwerp, Cardiff City, Queens Park Ranger, Rochdale, and Wycombe Wanderers. After his release by Manchester United, on 1 July 2010, he joined Cardiff City permanently where he made 29 appearances for the club. In 2012, he then joined Bristol City on a one-year deal with an option for a further 12 months and made his debut for the club on 18 August 2012. In May 2013, he joined Burnley after turning down a further one-year deal at Bristol City. After playing six years at Burnley, on 1 August 2019, he signed for newly-promoted Premier League club Aston Villa for an undisclosed fee, believed to be £8 million. He made his debut for the club on 10 August 2019.

On the international level, he has represented England at various age levels. He has represented England at U16, U17, U18, U19, U21, and the senior level. He made his England national team debut on 27 May 2016 in a UEFA Euro 2016 warm-up fixture.

  • He started playing football for the youth team of Wrexham. 
  • In 2002, he moved to the youth team of Manchester United and began his career with Manchester United but was unable to break into the first team.
  • At the start of the 2005-06 season, he was loaned out to Swindon Town initially until 1 January 2006. He made his professional debut in a League Cup tie against Wycombe Wanderers. During his time at Swindon, he played over 20 matches for the club.
  • In 2006, he joined Royal Antwerp on loan for the rest of the season but didn’t make any appearance for the club.
  • At the end of the 2007-08 season, he agreed to move to Championship club Cardiff City on loan for the duration of the 2008-09 season. During his time at Cardiff City, he played over 21 matches for the club.
  • On 15 August 2009, he was signed by Queens Park Rangers on an emergency three-month loan deal which got ended on 8 November 2009. On 23 September 2009, he made one first-team appearance during his loan in the 1-0 defeat against Chelsea in the League Cup.
  • After returning from QPR, he joined Rochdale on 13 November 2009 until the end of December 2009. On 14 November 2009, he made his debut for the club in a 3-2 loss against Chesterfield. The loan was then extended until 23 January 2010 before a further extension pushed the end date back to 31 January. During his time at Rochdale, he played over 12 matches for the club where he conceded only 10 goals, including four clean sheets, and finished on the losing team just once.

  • On 12 February 2010, he was a loan to Wycombe Wanderers where he made 16 appearances for the club.
  • After his release from Manchester United, on 1 July 2010, he joined Cardiff City permanently. During the 2010-11 season, with his performance, he earned him the club's Young Player of the Year award. During his time at Cardiff City, he made 40 appearances for the club in all the competitions.
