Virgil Van Dijk or Lionel Messi? Who will win the Ballon d'Or 2019?

Seems like the Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo is desperate to win his 6th Ballon d'Or. The five-time Ballon d'Or winner is obviously one of the best players of all-time in the world. However, the aging Ronaldo is not now on his best form this season compared how he used to be back in days. Despite winning two titles with Juventus in his first season there, as well as leading Portugal to first-ever UEFA Nations League title, Ronaldo is the last favorite to win the Ballon d'Or award this year.

The debate about Virgil Van Dijk and Lionel Messi winning Ballon d'Or this year must have felt insecure the Portuguese striker. The Juventus striker took to Instagram to highlight his achievements this season. He posted a picture of himself holding a UEFA Nations League Championship Trophy on his head and captioned the picture with all of his achievements this season.

Who Will Win Ballon d'Or 2019?

Cristiano Ronaldo displayed little more than average performance this season. He could not deliver the football fans up to their expectations. He finished the 2018-19 season winning Supercoppa Italiana and Serie A title. He was the 4th top goalscorer in the league with 21 goals. He finished the season with just 31 goals for both club and country. He was named Serie A Best Player of the season. Besides Lionel Messi and Virgil Van Dijk, there were several other players such as Kylian MBappe, Eden Hazard, Sterling, Mohamed Salah, Bernardo Silva who achieved more success this season. Despite winning two domestic titles and a UEFA Nations League with Portugal, his performance is considered average this season. Thus, football experts have predicted Ronaldo might not or will not win Ballon d'Or this year.

Juventus fans had expected and desired that the Ronaldo will deliver UEFA Champions League to Juventus. Juventus signing Ronaldo for record transfer from Real Madrid was a huge boost to their Champions League campaign. However, Juventus's path to UEFA Champions League glory was halted by the young team of Ajax in the quarterfinal. Juventus witnessed one of the greatest comebacks in the club's history when Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat-trick in the 2nd leg against Spanish Atletico Madrid. Atletico Madrid led the first leg with a 2-0 lead. However, Ronaldo failed to deliver goals for the Juventus in the quarterfinals. Juventus made an exit from the quarterfinal. Had Juventus defeated Ajax, Juventus might have won the Champions League as most of the big teams such as Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid, PSG made early exits from the Champions League. It would have become a boost to Ronaldo's 6th ballon d'Or pursuit.
