13-year-old Alysa Liu becomes youngest ever US figure skating champ

Alysa Liu became the youngest person to win an individual title at the US figure skating championships, stealing the show on Friday night, January 26th, 2019 with two triple axels and taking the title more than six months before her 14th birthday.

Defending champion Bradie Tennell, the leader after Thursday’s short program, fell during her free skate and Liu, skating immediately after, took advantage, breezing through her routine after the two early triple axels, one of which was in combination.

The Bay Area prodigy’s skate earned 143.62 points, enough to overcome Tennell. When her overall score of 217.51 was announced, she put her hands over her face, overcome with emotion.

Early Life of Alysa Lui

Alysa Liu was born in Clovis, California, United States. She is the elder daughter of Arthur Liu, an attorney who immigrated to the U.S. from the Sichuan Province in southwestern China in the 1990s. She has four siblings, a younger sister named Selina and triplet siblings named Julia, Joshua, and Justin.

Moving towards her education, She went to Chinese School for three years, then attended the Oakland School for the Arts, which offers an emphasis in figure skating. During her early schooling life, she started missing too much school due to traveling to competitions. She began homeschooling at her father’s law office in between practices. She used the same online program that other skaters, including fellow Bay Area skaters Karen Chen and Vincent Zhou, have used.

Alysa Liu began skating at the age of five. Her first skating competition was as a juvenile in 2015. At the 2016 U.S. Championships, she became the youngest lady to win the intermediate gold medal.

She placed fourth at the 2017 U.S. Championships competing in the novice category. At the 2017 Asian Open Trophy, where she finished second to Japan’s Mana Kawabe. She was the youngest skater to compete in the junior division at the 2018 U.S. Championships in San Jose, California. She won the competition. However, she was ineligible to compete at the 2018 World Junior Championships because she was not old enough. She was sent to the 2018 International Challenge Cup instead, where she won the advanced novice silver medal behind Hanna Yoshida of Japan.

In August 2018, Liu competed as a novice at the 2018 Asian Open Trophy in Bangkok, Thailand. She won the gold. She landed a ratified 3A in the free skate, becoming the youngest skater in history to perform a clean triple Axel in an international competition and the third American lady to do so, after Tonya Harding and Mirai Nagasu.

She qualified to compete in the senior ranks at the 2019 U.S. Championships in Detroit, Michigan. On January 25, 2019, she became the youngest skater in history to win the U.S. senior ladies’ title, after placing second in the short to defending U.S. champion Bradie Tennell with a record score, and first in the free with a clean program including a 3A-2T, 3A, 3Lz-3T, and 3Lz-1Eu-3S.
