Death of Rapper

Rapper Mac Miller died of an accidental drug overdose on 7 September 2018. He was found unresponsive in his Studio City home and was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy confirmed his death due to combination fentanyl, cocaine, and alcohol.

Arrest, Charge, Trial

Almost a year later on 4 September 2018, Cameron James Pettit was arrested in connection with the death of the rapper. Pettit was charged with distribution of controlled substance for allegedly supplying Miller with counterfeit oxycodone pills containing fentanyl two days before his death.

Following a series of investigations, numerous text messages between Miller and Pettit was obtained. They also obtained text messages between Miller and Pettit's associate, Johansson.

MILLER: All good. You don’t have lean do u?

MILLER: percs?

PETTIT: I got some dilaudid 2s but that’s about it

PETTIT: I could get yellows and blues tho

MILLER: blues as far as percs?

PETTIT: Yeah 30s

According to the court documents, a prostitute named Karla Amador, later turned adult film actress, delivered the drugs to Miller on 5 September 2018 and spent hours with Miller, as Miller paid around $3,000 for her. 

Appearing in Los Angeles federal court on 4 September 2019, he was ordered to be detained without bond pending his trial.

Pettit is an Executive chef by profession. He worked as the executive chef a the Sayers Club, prior to his arrest in Miller's death connection. Previously he worked as an executive chef at SimpleFoods.

Pettit has already faced two prior arrests, back in 2010, in Placer County, California, where he grew up. He was previously arrested in January 2010 and charged with false identification to a peace officer, possession of a switch-blade knife and felony possession of a designated controlled substance. He served 30 days in jail and three years of probation after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor drug charges. 

He was once again arrested in April 2010 for petty theft and brandishing a replica gun. He pleaded no contest to both charges and was sentenced to 30 days in jail with 3 years of probation.
