He attended college at Howard University in Washington, D.C., where he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in directing in 2000. His teacher, Phylicia Rashad helped raise funds to help Boseman and come classmates to attend the Oxford Mid-Summer Program of the British American Drama Academy in London. He initially wanted to become a writer and director. He returned to the United States and graduated from New York City's Digital Film Academy. He started his career from Brooklyn. He worked as the drama instructor in the Schomburg Junior Scholars Program at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem, New York.

Chadwick Boseman made his acting debut in the television film Third Watch in 2003. He also had the recurring role in All My Children in the same year.

Later, he has appeared in numerous television series including, Law & Order, CSI: NY, ER, Cold Case, and Lie to Me, among others.

The role of Nathaniel "Nate" Ray in the Lincoln Heights was one of his major role in the television series, where he appeared in 9 episodes between 2008 and 2009.
