Premier League club Middlesbrough and Independiente agreed a 6.9 million pounds deal for Forlan in January 2002. Middlesbrough would pay the transfer fee over 18 installments. 

Forlan traveled to England to finalize his deal. However, Manchester United offered the same fee in the single payment. Forlan signed with Manchester United in the same month. 

During his stint at Manchester United, he scored 17 goals for Manchester United in 98 appearances in all competitions.

Forlan represented Uruguay national team between 2002 and 2014. 

He scored 36 goals for his country before retiring from international football in 2015.

He is the first Uruguayan to win 100 caps.
