Francesco Paolo Augusto Cali, popularly known as Frank Cali was an American crime boss of the Gambino crime family. He is even more popular by the names "Frank" or "Franky Boy". Law enforcement considered him to have been the Gambino's "ambassador to Sicilian mobsters" and had linked him to the Inzerillo Mafia family from Palermo. He died of multiple gunshots outside his home on Staten Island on 13 March 2019.

The murder of the boss of a Gambino crime family, Frank Cali has created waves around the United States. Frank Cali aka "Franky Boy" was shot several times on Wednesday evening on 13 March 2019 in front of his home in the Todt Hill district of Staten Island by an unknown assailant. He was shot six times outside his home and was rushed into the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. 

Frank Cali was born on 26 March 1965. His birth name was Francesco Paolo Augusto Cali. He was born to Palermo, Sicily natives, Augusto, and Agata Cesare. His birthplace was in New York City, New York in the United States. He held American nationality. His zodiac sign was Gemini. 

His father had a clean police record in the United States through his name came in the Pizza Connection investigation. in the investigation, police discovered that he was a partner of Domenico Adamita, allied to Sicilian Mafia boss Gaetano Badalamenti.

He was the nephew-in-law of Sicilian mobster John Gambino and had close ties to the once powerful Sicilian Mafia family led by Salvatore Inzerillo. He was also a great-nephew of Bonanno crime family mobsters Giovanni Bonventre and Vito Bonventre. 

He was related to Gambino boss Paul Castellano. 

He bonded with Gambino mobster Jackie D'Amico, a lieutenant of Gambino boss John Gotti who operated a crew on 18th Avenue in Brooklyn.

FBI reported to Italian authorities in January 1997 that he had been "combined" into the Gambino family. He was promoted to acting capo when D'Amico became an acting boss and ran several import-export companies in Brooklyn, including Circus Fruits Wholesale in Fort Hamilton, Brooklyn.

Sicilian Mafia Ties

He maintained ties with the Sicilian Mafia. He married Rosaria Inzerillo, a relative of Gambino associate Frank Inzerillo who is a member of the Palermitan Inzerillo family. 

The Inzerillo family was forced to flee Sicily after losing the Second Mafia War against the Corleonesi of Toto Riina in the early 1980s. According to the Italian authorities, Cali and old Palermo boss, Filippo Casamento supported the return of the Inzerillos to Palermo. 

According to the Italian State Police, Cali was also a member of the Sicilian Cosa Nostra. He was the contact for Sicilian Mafiosi who traveled to New York to meet him, do business, and update him on Sicilian affairs. 

Gianni Nicchi is known to be one of Cali's 'men of honor' who went back and forth between Palermo and the US for drug trafficking. Nicchi finally settled in Daytona, Florida. He was known to employ high school students as drug runners. 

Cali and fellow captain Leonard "Lenny" DiMaria began extorting 'mob taxes' from the owner of a trucking and contracting company, Joseph Vollaro in early 2003. Vollaro was involved in building a NASCAR speedway on Staten Island. He was forced to pay tens of thousands of amount to D'Amico and Gambino boss Nicholas Corozzo. Later, Vollaro began working with federal authorities as an informant to avoid prison time for a cocaine conviction in 2004. His undercover work led to a massive indictment four years later. 

Authorities arrested Cali and 61 other New York Cosa Nostra associates on 8 February 2008 and charged them with federal racketeering charges. It was called as a part of Operation Old Bridge. 

Old Bridge terminated the drug trafficking between the Sicilian Mafia and the Gambino family.

Cali acted as the Gambino "ambassador to the Sicilian mobsters" and as a liaison between D'Amico and the Sicilian connections to the Inzerillo family, claimed by the prosecutors. 

Cali, along with D'Amico, and DiMaria, was charged with racketeering, extortion, and conspiracy.

Cali pleaded guilty on 4 June 2008 to conspiring to extort money from Vollaro.

He was incarcerated at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York. He was released from prison on 6 April 2009.

According to court papers filed in Brooklyn Federal Court, Cali's uncle John Gambino was elevated to the family's ruling panel around 2009. 

The U.S. Justice Department demanded that Cali should not be in contact with Gambino. He was only allowed to attend weddings or holiday ceremonies approved in advance by Cali's probation officer. 

The New York crime reporter Jerry Capeci identified Cali as the new underboss of the Gambino crime family in October 2012. He had identified the current boss of the Sicilian Mafia, Domenico Cefalu. 

It was reported in July 2013 that Cali turned down the position of boss of the family.

Daily News reported in August 2015 that Cali had taken over as the acting boss of the Gambino family. 

Cali died at Staten Island University Hospital on 13 March 2019. He was 53 years old. He was shot six times in the chest by an unknown assailant in front of his home. The unknown assailant was run over by a blue pickup. It was later determined that he tried to evade the killer by hiding under a vehicle. 

Hours after Joseph Cammarano Jr, the reputed acting boss of the Bonanno crime family, and his consigliere, John Zancocchio was acquitted of racketeering and conspiracy to commit extortion charges, Cali's murder incident occurred.

He was married to Rosaria Inzerillo. Rosaria is a sister of Pietro Inzerillo and a relative of Gambino associate Frank Inzerillo.
