Gelson Martins was born on 11 May 1995, in Praia, Cape Verde. He was born to Carlos Alberto Martins and Alcinda Lopes. He holds Cape Verdean and Portuguese nationality. His birth sign is Taurus and belongs to the African ethnicity. Martin in his teens moved to Portugal. He started his youth football career at CF Benfica in 2008. In 2010, he joined Sporting CP.

• Gelson Martins started his senior club career from Sporting CP B team in 2014. Sporting CP signed him for 5 years deal and set his release clause to 45 million Euro.
• Sporting CP promoted Martins to the senior team in 2015. Martins has won Supertaca Candido de Oliveira at Sporting in 2015 and Taca da Liga in the 2017-18 season.
• A group of Sporting supporters invaded the club's training center and assaulted several players and staff member in May 2018. Following the incident, Gelson Martins requested to terminate his contract at Sporting CP. Spanish club Atletico Madrid signed Gelson Martins in July 2018, on a five-year deal.  Martin has won UEFA Super Cup at Atletico in 2018.
• On 27 January 2019, Martins joined AS Monaco FC on loan until the end of the season. He made his first Ligue 1 appearance on 2 February, providing an assist for Alesandr Golovin early in the first half and also being involved in Cesc Fàbregas' goal in the 2–1 home victory over Toulouse FC.
• In July 2019, Martins joined Monaco outright after signing a five-year contract.

• Gelson Martins represented Portugal national team under different age levels. Before playing for Portugal senior team, Martins represented Portugal U18, U19, U20, U21, and U23 national team. He was the member of the Portugal squad which finished runner-up in the 2014 UEFA European Under-19 Championship. He was also a key player for Portugal U20 squad that reached the quarterfinal in the 2015 FIFA U20 World Cup.s
• In late September 2016, Martins got his first call up to the senior team, for 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and the Faroe Islands. He won his first cap against the former, replacing Pepe for the last 18 minutes of the 6–0 win in Aveiro.
• Martins made his international debut for Portugal senior team in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. He was also included in the 23-man squad of the Portugal national team for 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
