Gypsy Rose Blanchard is an American convicted murderer who killed her own mother Dee Dee Blanchard in July 2015. She planned the murder of her mother along with her boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, with whom she met online. She was sentenced to 10 years in prison, whereas her boyfriend was sentenced to life in prison.

Gypsy Rose Blanchard was born on 1 July 1991. She was born to a father, Rod Blanchard, and a mother, Dee Dee Blanchard. Her birth place is in Louisiana in the United States. Dee Dee claimed that her daughter Gypsy Rose suffered from leukemia, asthma, muscular dystrophy, along with several other chronic conditions. Gypsy encountered a minor bike accident while on her grandfather's bike when she was 7 or 8 years old. She suffered an abrasion to her knee. From then on, Gypsy was confined to a wheelchair although she was healthy enough to walk on her own on several occasions. 

She stopped going to school after second grade and was homeschooled because of her supposed illness.

After Rod remarried, Dee Dee moved in with her father and stepmother. Dee Dee was suspected about her treatment of Gypsy and expressed suspicion about her role in her stepmother's health, she left with Gypsy for Slidell. 

Dee Dee and Gypsy lived in public housing in Slidell. Their bills were paid with public assistance granted due to her daughter's supposed medical conditions. Dee Dee regularly took Gypsy to the emergency room for minor ailments. Several surgeries were performed on her during this time. Dee repeatedly claimed that Gypsy had muscular dystrophy through a muscle biopsy found no sign of it. 

They moved to Covington after Hurricane Katrina devasted the Slidell. 

Tired with her mother, Gypsy tried to escape from her mother on several occasions. She was seen without her wheelchair and walking on several occasions. Her mother once her in a hotel room with a man she had met online. Dee Dee threatened Gypsy to inform the police and threatened to smash her fingers if Gypsy ever tried to escape again. Dee Dee kept Gypsy leashed and handcuffed to her bed for two weeks.

Gypsy met Nicholas Godejohn sometime around 2012. The two started discussing eloping together. They met in person for the first time. The two had sex in a bathroom. Gypsy did not find him as desirable in person as he had seemed online. However, the two continued their internet interactions and started developing plans to kill Dee Dee. 

Who Murdered Dee Dee Blanchard?

In June 2015, on a particular day, Gypsy allowed her boyfriend, Godejohn in her house. She allegedly gave him duct tape, gloves, and a knife. She hid in the bathroom and covered her ears so that she would no have to hear her mother's death. Her boyfriend then stabbed her mother several times in her sleep. After that, the two had sex in her room and later fled the scene. 

Dee Dee Blanchard's body was found facedown in the bedroom of her house just outside Springfield by sheriff's deputies in Green County in the late night of 14 June 2015. She was found lying on the bed in a pool of blood from the several stab wounds inflicted several days earlier. 

Investigation

Gypsy Rose and her boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn was found by police in Wisconsin. Both of them surrendered and were taken into custody on charges of murder and felony armed criminal action. Following investigations, the investigators came to the conclusion that she was actually an adult and did not suffer from any physical and mental health issues that her mother claimed. 

Further investigations found that she had no claimed disorders. 

Professionals suspected that Dee Dee had Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a mental disorder where a parent or other caretaker exaggerates, fabricates, or induces illness in a person under their care to obtain sympathy or attention. She had been making her daughter, Gypsy to pretend to be disabled and chronically ill, subjecting her to unnecessary surgery and medication, and controlling her through occasional physical and psychological abuse. The two were benefitted from the efforts of charities such as Habitat for Humanity, Ronald McDonald House, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. 

Conviction, Sentence

Gypsy Rose Blanchard accepted the plea bargain agreement in July 2015 and pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. She was sentenced to 10-year in prison. 

Her boyfriend, Godejohn was convicted of first-degree murder. Godejohn was sentenced to life in prison in February 2019.

Film, Documentary

The case was the subject of a 2017 HBO documentary, Mommy Dead and Dearest. 

The case was also the subject of the 2018 documentary Gypsy's Revenge. 

Lifetime drama version of the case, Love You to Death aired in January 2019. 

Hulu created a crime series based on the case, The Act in 2018 and released in March 2019.
