On July 31, 2006, the Rangers traded Chavez to Pittsburgh Pirates for Kip Wells. In 2007 he was assigned to Triple-A Indianapolis Indians. In 2007, 51 games were appeared by Chavez. He earned run average (ERA) is 3.80. On August 27 he was promoted to the majors. He made his debut on the same day. In 2008-2009 he had 4.48 ERA in 821/3 pitched for Pirates.

     Atlanta Braves

On November 3, 2009 Pirates traded Chavez. Tampa Bay Rays were the second exchange for the second baseman Akinori Iwamura. Atlanta Braves for Rafael Soriano was traded on December 10. In 2010 Braves had 5.89 ERA in 36 2/6 innings.

    Kansas City Royals

Chavez was traded to Kansas City Royals on 31 July 2010 in which in 33 2/3 innings he had 6.95 ERA.

    Toronto Blue Jays

Chavez was claimed from Toronto Blue Jays on 31 July 2010 and in 10 games he had 3.72 ERA. Again on 20 November 2015, he again joined Toronto.

    Oakland Athletics

Chavez was also traded to Oakland Athletics on 24 August 2012. In 18 inning game, he pitched 5 2/3 shutout innings. He also extended one year on 12 January 2015. His season ended in mid-September.

    Los Angeles Dodgers

Chavez was again traded to Los Angeles Dodgers by Toronto on 1 August 2016. He appeared in 24 games.

Chavez was again signed to Los Angeles Angels on 11 November 2016. He started 21 games and gained 5.24 ERA.

   Texas Rangers and Chicago Clubs

Chavez was signed to Texas Rangers on a one-year contract on 23 February 2018. He was also acquired by Chicago clubs on 19 July 2018.

Los Angeles Angels

On February 26, 2021, Chavez signed a minor league contract with the Los Angeles Angels organization that included an invitation to spring training.[42] On March 26, 2021, Chavez was released by the Angels.

Atlanta Braves

On April 17, 2021, Chavez signed a minor league contract with the Atlanta Braves organization.[44] On June 24, Chavez was selected to the active roster.

Chicago Cubs

On March 13, 2022, Chavez signed a minor league split contract with the Chicago Cubs.[47][48] On April 2, 2022, the Cubs selected the contract of Chavez.

Atlanta Braves

On April 20, 2022, Chavez, along with cash considerations, was traded to the Atlanta Braves for Sean Newcomb.

Los Angeles Angels

On August 2, 2022, Chavez and Tucker Davidson were traded from the Braves to the Los Angeles Angels for Raisel Iglesias. During the 2022 season, Chavez set the record for most trades in a Major League Baseball career, with ten.
