Their relationship between them turned from friendship to sexual during the summer of 1996. Letourneau was arrested in 1997 after a relative of her husband Steve complained to the police.

She pleaded guilty and was convicted of two counts of second-degree child rape. She was sentenced to six months in the county jail and three years of sex offender treatment.

Two weeks later, after completing the jail sentence, on February 3, 1998, she was found having sexual relations with Fualaau in her car. She was arrested, and police found $6,200 cash, baby clothes, and her passport inside her car.

She was sentenced to seven and a half years imprisonment for violating the terms of her probation. 

The same year, Letourneau and Fualaau co-wrote the book called Only One Crime, Love (French: Un Seul crime, l'amour), which was published in France.
