Olga Aleksandrovna Ladyzhenskaya, popularly known as Olga Aleksandrovna was a Russian mathematician. She is best known for her work on partial differential equations, fluid dynamics, and the finite difference method for the Navier-Stokes equations. She is the recipient of Lomonosov Gold medal, awarded in 2002. She is also the author of over two hundred scientific works, among which are six monographs.

Early Life of Olga Ladyzhenskaya

Olga Ladyzhenskaya was born on 7 March 1922. His birth name was Olga Aleksandrovna Ladyzhenskaya. She was born to a father, Aleksandr Ivanovich Ladyzhenski, and a mother, Anna Mikhailovna. Her birth place was in Kologriv, RSFSR. She held Russian nationality. Her interest in mathematics grew as she was the daughter of a mathematics teacher. His father was arrested and executed as an enemy of the people.

She completed her high school in 1939. She was not admitted to Leningrad University due to her father's status. She attended Moscow Univerisity, where she graduated in 1947. She presented her doctoral thesis in 1953.

She became a teacher at the university in Leningrad and at the Steklov Institute. 

Mathematical accomplishments

Ladyzhenskaya was known for her work on partial differential equations.

She is especially known for Hilbert's nineteenth problem on partial differential equations.

She is also known for her work on fluid dynamics.

She provided the first rigorous proofs of the convergence of a finite difference method for the Navier-Stokes equations.
