Rachel Levine is an American pediatrician and four-star admiral who is currently serving as the United States assistant secretary for health since March 26, 2021. She previously served as the Pennsylvania physician general(2015-17), then as secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Health(2017-21).
She is also a professor of pediatrics and psychiatry at the Penn State College of Medicine. Known to one of only a few openly transgender government officials in the United States, Levine is the first to hold an office that requires Senate confirmation and the first female PHSCC four-star admiral.
On October 19, 2021, Levine was commissioned as a four-star admiral in the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps (PHSCC), becoming the first openly transgender four-star officer in the nation's eight uniformed services.
