Duane Lee Chapman, popularly known as Duane Chapman or Dog the Bounty Hunter or simply Dog is an American reality Tv star, bounty hunter, and a former bail bondsman. He rose to prominence as a bounty hunter when he successfully captured Max Factor heir Andre Luster in Mexico in 2003. He got his own series Dog the Bounty Hunter in 2004. After the series ended in 2012, he appeared in a similarly formatted TV show, Dog and Beth: On the Hunt in 2013, along with his late wife. He will return in his upcoming series, Dog's Most Wanted in 2020.

Rise to Fame

He rose to international fame when he captured Max Factor heir Andrew Luster in Mexico in June 2003. Luster had fled the United States in the middle of his trial on charges of drugging and raping a number of women. His sons, Leland, and Tim assisted him on the capture. Mexican police stopped them on their way to California and jailed all four of them. Mexican authorities sent Luster to the States after confirming his identity. 

Chapman and his team were still in the Mexican jail, who was initially denied bail. His wife Beth stood up and alerted the media, rising public opinions. They were later granted bail. Bounty hunting is illegal in Mexico. They fled the jurisdiction and became international bail-jumpers. US Marshals arrested them in September 2006 and jailed them in Honolulu on behalf of the Mexican government. 

The three men were released on bail in the same month. Chapman was presented in Honolulu courtroom with his ankles shackled. He was later ordered to wear an electronic monitoring device around his ankle. Mexican government tried to extradite the three from the US. Hawaii State Representatives introduced Concurrent Resolution 50. to the President of Mexico and the Second District Court of Guadalajara to drop extradition charges against Chapman and the resolution was passed by the International Affairs committee in March 2007. 

Chapman had appeared on numerous media shows. He had given interviews in several talk shows. His electronic monitoring device was removed in September 2006. 

The First Criminal Court in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico dismissed all criminal charges pending against the three in August 2007.

He was convicted of first-degree murder of Jerry Oliver in 1976. He had been waiting in a car when his friend accidentally shot and killed Jerry Oliver in a struggle during a deal to by cannabis. He was sentenced to five years in a Texas prison. He served 18 months at Texas State Penitentiary in Huntsville, Texas. He was paroled in 1979. He is prohibited from owning firearms due to his felony convictions. 

He gained criticism in October 2007 after his phone conversation with his son, Tucker about the relationship his son was having with an African-American girl was leaked to the media. He used the word "Nigger" during the conversation. He later apologized publicly.
