Kathleen Turner wrote in her 2008 memoir, Send Your Roses that Cage had stolen a chihuahua and was arrested twice for drunk-driving while they filmed Peggy Sue Got Married. She later admitted that Cage did not steal a chihuahua. Cage successfully won a libel action against Turner, her publisher Headline Publishing Group and Associated Newspapers.

In December 2009, Christina Fulton sued Cage for $13 million and for the house in which she was living. The case was settled in June 2011.

In April 2011, he was arrested in New Orleans' French Quarter district for suspicion of domestic abuse battery, disturbing the peace and public intoxication. Police was flagged down by onlookers after Cage allegedly grabbed his wife's upper arm while appearing to be under the influence of alcohol. He was held in police custody. He was released after Duane "Dog" Chapman posted his bail of $11,000. The charges against him were dropped in May 2011 before he was scheduled to appear in court on 31 May 2011.
